Hey Good People,
I'm away from home this weekend but I'm noodling on some album reviews for you.Â
I did a quick poll on Twitter and IG asking folks what album they'd love to read about and the highest votes were for Doja Cat's latest album Scarlet and Cleo Sol's latest projects Heaven & Golden.
I'm excited to dig into the crates and review those but in the meantime I wanted to pull my favorite songs from the albums I mentioned so we can all get equally obsessed with these projects as we embark on doing a close listening to all them together.Â
Album: Scarlet by Doja Cat
This mid-tempo track has some good punch to it, Doja is a master of oscillating her voice for whatever character she’s evoking so this track is a great example of her chameleon ways. The song is also placed early on the tracklist so it sticks in my head better than other parts of the album.
Album: Falling or Flying by Jorja Smith
-This song on the album really took hold of me. I love a ballad with strong guitar chords that use dynamic songwriting that open up a feeling that I haven’t heard in a song before. The same reasons I love Renee Rapp’s Tummy Hurts are why I love this track. It’s an ear worm but the verses are moving the song along with a punch that’s undeniable.
Album: Heaven by Cleo Sol
-This is maybe the shortest Cleo Sol song she’s ever put out…. I could be wrong but go with me here. I love the Bossanova vibe of this track, the lyrics are confident and easy in a way that feels breezy. Her production has really elevated on this album and it shows in how she’s doing less lyrically but she’s more intentional in her production.
That’s all folks!
Wishing you an easy Sunday of rest, see ya next week!
